I'm not living in the UK for a couple of months though, so I was wondering if it's something you guys would interested in taking over or incorporating it into your wordpress?
Have seen a "real" Downturn Abbey. When I was a student had a job for 2 months cleaning windows. Fellow bellowed out of window complaining about our squeaky chamois leathers keeping him awake at 3pm! The house was filthy. On the top floor where you had to duck your head to miss the ceiling, we saw the staff. they looked as though they uncannily looked alike as if they were all related.

Ironically the police provoked riot in Bristol's Stoke Croft was about the Big Society. The ongoing protests were about individual, non-chain shops selling locally produced goods. In the community there is a lot of mutual support and people living very purposeful lives.

Police provoked?

A well prepared task force of 160 police officers, which would have taken hours of preparation attacked a squat with 6 people in it.

Within two streets, within the previous two weeks another squat was ended. Two policemen turned up the squatters invited them in for their final cup of tea and they all left peacefully.

The time of the attack was 9pm on a bank holiday in an area where there are a lot of bars, clubs etc. This is obviously not a smart time to start this kind of action unless your objective was to start trouble.

The real violence occurred after police cordons pushed people into the problem area and then a squad aggressively pushed and uses their batons on on-lookers - that's when it all kicked off.

The inflammable liquid used/stored in the squat was paraffin used for heating and for the fact that one of the squatters was a fire juggler. Paraffin is not recommended for use in Molotov cocktails.

When looking for cuts in the Avon and Somerset Police Force I would suggest the people that set up this raid should be the first to be shown the door.

It is not just about whether or not there are big savings to be had by streamlining public bodies – there is the accountability aspect of these non-elected quangos that seems not to receive media interest or comment. I refer in particular to the English National Park Authorities who are on the public bodies hit list and currently under review by Defra on their governance arrangements. Residents living inside these parks have never been given the opportunity to directly elect the members of their National Park Authority and this gives us the opportunity to remedy the democratic deficit. The Public Bodies Bill now at committee stage in the House of Lords was also seen as creating a mechanism to enable changes to the constitution of NPAs to take place if the governance review recommends such changes. Upon reading the Hansard documents on this Bill, the Lords are removing the National Park Authorities from the Schedules. I am not a politician and I am the first to admit that I find the processes of a Bill to be very confusing – but I am not stupid either; when I read the comments in the committee documents by a member who also happens to be the President of the National Parks Association I had a gut feeling that NPAs would retain the status quo and National Park residents will not share the equal opportunities enjoyed by residents outside of these park boundaries. We have no ‘champion’ who could make a difference for us; we have no “big society” ready to help us; we have to put our trust in a coalition government, which has some great new ideas but still too many dinosaurs implementing them.
